Modify an US Power864 alarm panel to be used at 50Hz.

The Power864 panel is hard coded at 60Hz mains and can not be used in a country where the mains is at 50Hz.
If you connect such a panel to 50Hz you will get a "AC Line Freq. Trouble" and that can not be cleared.

Here is how I did it.

I bought a 60Hz generator at www.elmelectronics called ELM440, it is priced at $8.50 CDN. With shipping to Sweden it ended at $15.

You will also need:

1 pcs of 78L05 5v regulator
2 pcs of 27pf capacitor (I used 22pf)
1 pcs of 100n capacitor
1 pcs of 3.57MHz xtal
1 pcs of 8-pin IC socket

Here is the modified schematic:

The schematic for the 60Hz generator

Connect AUX + to the input to the LM78L05 and AUX - to ground.

I used a universal PCB to solder the components, here is the result:

You will have to remove the existing feed of the mains frequency to the panel, to do that you will have to unsolder (or cut) one leg of a resistor. The resistor is located here:

Here is a closeup of the resistor location:

Here is have soldered the output from the generator to the panel:

I hooked everything up and Hip Hip Hurray, no more "AC Line Freq. Trouble".

This is dedicated to every DIY around the world that refuse to buy overpriced products.

An example:

At www.alarmbutiken.com (Swedish site) they have a Power864 kit priced (2004-07-16) at SEK 7375:- ($983).
The same type of kit at homesecuritystore.com is priced at $275 (you will have to put a kit together), add the Swedish tax (25%) and you get $344, add shipping ($50?) and customs (8%) to end up with $425 (SEK 3187:-).

I have installed a Power864 with the Escort module (5580TC) + box, printer interface (5400) + box, power module (5204) + box, two keypads (one 5500Z and one 5516Z), seven zone expanders (5108) with DSC boxes (5001CP), Sentrol 5150 glass break detectors for every window in the house, two motion detectors (DT500), four fire detectors (4WTA-B), gas detector (for natural gas), 30 magnetic contacts (GRI-100T) and two sirens. My total for this setup was $1800.

I have received a mail from a french guy, a kit from a french dealer is priced at EUR 1400 ($1690!!!), yes you read right! $1690
